SpaceX confirms first Mars cargo mission launch date
The unmanned Starship mission will carry equipment and supplies to prepare for eventual human habitation on Mars.
SpaceX has confirmed that its first cargo mission to Mars is scheduled to launch in September 2027, marking a historic milestone in humanity's push to become a multi-planetary species. The unmanned Starship vehicle will carry approximately 100 tonnes of equipment, including solar panels, habitat components, and life support systems.
The mission, designated Mars Cargo-1, will take roughly seven months to reach the Red Planet, arriving in April 2028. If successful, it will lay the groundwork for the first crewed mission, tentatively planned for 2030.
Mission Details
The cargo includes autonomous construction robots designed to begin assembling basic infrastructure before humans arrive. These robots will excavate regolith for radiation shielding, deploy solar power arrays, and test water extraction from subsurface ice deposits.
