EU approves sweeping new AI regulation framework

EU approves sweeping new AI regulation framework

The European Union has formally adopted the world's most comprehensive artificial intelligence regulation, setting rules that will govern how AI can be developed and deployed across the bloc. The AI Act, passed by the European Parliament with 523 votes in favour and 46 against, establishes a risk-based framework that categorises AI applications by their potential to cause harm.

The most significant provisions include a complete ban on real-time facial recognition in public spaces by law enforcement, mandatory transparency requirements for AI systems that interact with humans, and strict rules governing the use of AI in employment, education, and financial services.

Global Implications

As with the GDPR, the EU's AI regulation is expected to have a global impact, as international companies will need to comply when operating in European markets.
