Cybersecurity experts warn of sophisticated new phishing campaign
Attackers are using AI-generated emails that mimic internal corporate communications with alarming accuracy.
Cybersecurity firms are raising the alarm about a new wave of phishing attacks that use artificial intelligence to generate highly convincing fake emails that mimic the writing style and formatting of real corporate communications. The campaign, dubbed "DeepMail" by researchers, has already compromised several major organisations.
Unlike traditional phishing attempts, which often contain telltale grammatical errors or suspicious formatting, the AI-generated emails are virtually indistinguishable from genuine internal messages. The attackers appear to train their models on publicly available corporate communications, press releases, and social media posts to replicate the tone and vocabulary of specific organisations.
How to Protect Yourself
- Always verify unexpected requests through a separate communication channel
- Be wary of any email that creates urgency or asks for credentials
- Enable multi-factor authentication on all accounts
- Report suspicious emails to your IT security team immediately
